Makapiko River

Overview

Makapiko River runs through Barangay Rizal in Batuan municipality, Bohol — the same municipality known for the Chocolate Hills Close Encounter viewpoint. The river is approximately 2 km long, characterized by clear water, lush vegetation, and a scenic landscape. Its current varies with rainfall, producing several short rapids suitable for river tubing.

For the local community, the river is a working resource: residents fish it for food and use it for swimming and recreation. The Makapiko River Park serves as the starting point for organized visitor activities. From the park, visitors hike along the river to the tubing launch point.

The river also supports the wider local biodiversity and is part of Batuan’s watershed ecosystem.

Barangay Rizal, Batuan, Bohol. Batuan is in the interior of Bohol, approximately 40 km from Tagbilaran City toward the Chocolate Hills area. Rizal Cave is nearby within the barangay.

Getting There

From Tagbilaran, travel toward Carmen/Batuan on the Chocolate Hills highway (approximately 1–1.5 hours). Turn off at Batuan and proceed to Barangay Rizal. The Makapiko River Park is the visitor entry point.

Practical Info

The tube trip runs 45 minutes to an hour depending on river flow. The route begins at Makapiko River Park, with a hike along the bank to the tubing launch point before the float itself starts.

What to Expect

A 2 km run of clear water and riverbank vegetation, broken by a handful of short rapids that punctuate an otherwise leisurely float. Unlike a purely tourist-managed course, the water stays in daily use — passing a family fishing from the bank is as likely as passing another tube group.

Rizal Cave is in the same barangay and can be combined with a river visit.

Notes

Batuan is positioned between Tagbilaran and the Chocolate Hills, making it a viable stop on an interior Bohol circuit. The municipality also has Bonogan Cave, Janlud Cave, and Kansagipot Falls among its recorded attractions — a fairly concentrated cluster of natural sites.

The river’s role as a community food source (fishing) points to its ecological health. River tubing in clear freshwater rivers is a growing activity segment in Bohol alongside cave and waterfall tourism.
