Somewhere between 1,260 and 1,776 grass-covered limestone mounds are scattered across Carmen, Batuan, and Sagbayan municipalities in Bohol’s interior — the exact count depends on where you draw the boundary of the formation, and nobody has ever finished counting with full agreement. What’s not in dispute is the shape: near-uniform, conical, and dense enough across the landscape that no single photograph captures the scale of it.
The geology, in plain terms
The traditional explanation locals will tell you involves a heartbroken giant, and it’s worth hearing once — but it’s folklore, not geology, and it undersells what actually happened here, which is a genuinely interesting story in its own right.
The hills are a karst formation — more specifically, the type geologists call cockpit karst, found in a handful of other places worldwide (parts of Cuba, Jamaica, Indonesia, China, Malaysia, and Puerto Rico), though Bohol’s version is regarded as one of the finest examples of the type anywhere. The process started an estimated 2 to 5 million years ago, during the Pliocene, when this area was a shallow marine platform built up from thick, widespread coral reef growth — meaning the rock these hills are made of is, at its origin, compacted reef material, the same broad category of stone the region’s coral-block churches were quarried from. Tectonic uplift raised that reef platform above sea level and fractured it. From there, millions of years of tropical rainfall, streams, and groundwater dissolved the exposed limestone along its natural fracture lines and bedding planes, gradually stripping the surrounding rock away and leaving the more resistant material behind as the cone-shaped remnants you see today.
Geologists don’t fully agree on the finer mechanics of why the remaining hills came out this uniform — some frame it as a once-continuous limestone block worn down fairly evenly by rain and runoff, leaving cones where the rock resisted longest; others frame it as classic cone karst, where water preferentially dissolved the rock along small cracks and bedding-plane weaknesses, carving individual cones rather than stripping a single sheet. Both readings agree on the underlying cause — uplifted marine limestone shaped by dissolution and erosion — even if the precise shaping mechanism is still debated. The Chocolate Hills are recognized as a National Geological Monument, and Bohol has pursued UNESCO Global Geopark status building partly on this formation’s significance.
Where the name actually comes from
The “chocolate” is seasonal, not permanent. The hills are covered in a grass species that stays green through Bohol’s wet months and turns brown during the dry season — it’s that dry-season browning, across more than a thousand hills at once, that gives the formation its name and its most photographed look. Visit in the wet season and you’ll see the same hills in green; the geology hasn’t changed, only the grass has.
Carmen viewpoint
The main, most-visited viewing point is the Chocolate Hills Complex in Carmen — a purpose-built observation deck reached by a stairway, positioned to give a wide panoramic view across a dense cluster of hills. It’s the default stop on almost every Bohol countryside tour itinerary, which also means it’s the most crowded, particularly around midday tour-bus arrivals.
Sagbayan Peak — the quieter alternative
Sagbayan Peak, in neighboring Sagbayan municipality, offers a comparable elevated view of the hills with noticeably fewer crowds, and has built out additional attractions on-site (gardens, a zip line among them) for visitors who want more than the viewpoint alone. It’s a reasonable substitute or add-on to Carmen rather than a replacement stop on most routings, since the two viewpoints look out over different clusters of the formation.
The countryside circuit
Neither viewpoint tends to be visited in isolation — both sit within Bohol’s standard countryside touring loop, typically combined with the Loboc River, the Bilar man-made mahogany forest, and the Philippine tarsier sanctuary on the same day trip out of Tagbilaran or Panglao.
