Dumog Sandbar

Overview

Dumog Sandbar is a tidal white sandbar in Barangay Bilangbilangan, Tubigon, on the northern coast of Bohol. The sandbar forms part of the Danajon Double Barrier Reef — the only double barrier reef in the Philippines and one of only a few worldwide. The bar is only accessible and visible during low tide; at high tide it submerges.

The name Dumog comes from the Cebuano word meaning “to gather in the area,” a reference to the practice of fisherfolk from nearby islands converging here to fish and collect seashells. A second meaning of Dumog is “fighting” — local oral history records that during the Japanese occupation (1942–1945), Japanese forces and Filipino guerrillas engaged in close combat on the island.

Location

Barangay Bilangbilangan, Tubigon, northern Bohol. The sandbar lies offshore, within the Danajon Bank reef system. Tubigon is the main gateway town for northwestern Bohol and serves as a ferry port connecting Bohol to Cebu (Hagnaya, San Remigio).

Getting There

From Tubigon Poblacion wharf, hire a motorised banca. The crossing takes approximately 20 minutes. The sandbar is only accessible and visible at low tide — check tide tables before departure. [TO ENRICH: banca hire cost, recommended tide windows, whether local operators offer guided trips.]

What to Expect

A low-tide sandbar rising out of the open sea, with the reef system underneath supporting one of the more biodiverse marine areas in Bohol. Fisherfolk still work the surrounding waters. The bar itself is narrow and ephemeral — its size and shape shift with the tide — so bring sun protection; there’s no shade out here.

Notes

The Danajon Bank context is significant: it is a globally recognised reef system under pressure from overfishing and dynamite fishing, and conservation efforts by local LGUs and NGOs are ongoing. Tubigon municipality contains a second sandbar attraction, Mundong Sandbar.
