Ilijan Hill

Overview

Ilijan Hill — locally called Solid Rock — is described as the only known volcanic plug in the Philippines. A volcanic plug (also called a volcanic neck or puy) forms when magma hardens inside a volcano’s vent; the surrounding softer rock erodes away over geological time, leaving the harder intrusive core standing as an isolated column. Ilijan Hill rises 162 metres above the agricultural countryside of Barangay Ilijan Norte, Tubigon, with a steep, cylindrical profile covered in trees and vegetation.

In August 2025, the Department of Tourism (DOT) formally launched the Enchanted Ilijan Plug of Tubigon Project — the town’s winning entry to the Tourism Champions Challenge, a nationwide LGU competition of nearly 100 proposals. The project placed first in the Visayas category and received P25 million in development funding.

Location

Barangay Ilijan Norte, Tubigon municipality, northwestern Bohol. Tubigon is approximately 40 km northwest of Tagbilaran City and is one of Bohol’s main ferry ports, with fast craft connections to Cebu City.

Getting There

From Tagbilaran City, take a bus or van toward Tubigon (approximately 1 hour). From Tubigon town proper, habal-habal motorcycles or tricycles serve Barangay Ilijan Norte.

Travellers arriving from Cebu via the Tubigon–Cebu ferry route can access the hill directly from the Tubigon pier without backtracking to Tagbilaran.

What to Expect

The climb is steep, and the summit opens onto views across the agricultural plains of northwestern Bohol. Tree and shrub cover on the slopes supports the birds and understory plants typical of Bohol’s uncleared hillsides, though the hill has not had a formal biodiversity survey.

The hill also carries a layer of local oral history unconnected to its geology: in the late 1970s, a religious community calling itself the Subano Group Catholic Holy God Spirit, led by a woman known locally as Princess Analiza, built a settlement of nipa huts on the summit. Her daughter, Batong Orange, was reportedly born there unassisted. The stories persist in local memory and are part of why older residents regard the hill as a place apart from the ordinary countryside around it.
