Can-umantad Falls

Overview

Can-umantad Falls in Barangay Cadapdapan, Candijay, is regarded as the tallest waterfall in Bohol province. The name derives from the Boholano word can-uman, meaning sixty, referencing its approximate 60-metre (200-foot) height. The water descends in multiple tiers over horizontal to slightly dipping beds of calcareous and tuffaceous sediments — the clastic member of the Carmen Formation, dated to the Middle Miocene (approximately 16 to 11 million years ago). The falls are sourced from the Cadapdapan River.

Location

Barangay Cadapdapan, Candijay, Bohol. The falls lie roughly 14 to 15 kilometres from Candijay town centre, below the Cadapdapan Rice Terraces.

Getting There

From Tagbilaran City, travel east toward Candijay — approximately 2 hours by bus or van. From Candijay town, proceed to Barangay Cadapdapan. The Cadapdapan Rice Terraces are nearby and are frequently combined with a visit to the falls. The final stretch of road is paved but very steep and winding, generally unsuitable for standard cars; most visitors hire a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) from the town center or Lungsod Daan Public Market for this last-kilometre approach, followed by a short walk or flight of steps down to the falls.

• Entrance fee: ₱20 for adults, ₱10 for children (per LGU Candijay). A local guide is often assigned or offered at the entrance on a tip basis (around ₱100) rather than a fixed fee; the path is a single marked trail, so a guide is helpful but not strictly required. Swimming is possible at the shallow base pool of the falls (roughly 2–5 feet deep depending on the specific pool), as well as in additional pools along the approach trail.
• The approach passes through Cadapdapan Rice Terraces, making a combined visit practical.
• Trail conditions vary — sturdy footwear is recommended.

What to Expect

The falls descend in multiple tiers into a natural basin at the base of a deep ravine, with the exposed sedimentary rock strata visible on the cliff face. Water volume rises noticeably during and after the wet season.
