Inabanga: River Mouth and Northern Transit Point

Inabanga occupies the delta where the Inabanga River — one of Bohol’s longest waterways — meets the Camotes Sea on the island’s northern coast, roughly 48 kilometres from Tagbilaran by road. The municipality runs on rice and coconut agriculture rather than tourism: paddies and coconut groves cover most of the inland barangays, and the river’s lower reaches support small-scale fisheries and banca crossings between riverside communities. The town’s Spanish-era core dates to a 17th-century reduccion settlement that consolidated scattered river-valley communities under a single parish. Saint John the Baptist Church, in the poblacion, traces its original construction to around 1660, rebuilt more than once after earthquake damage. During the Philippine-American War, guerrilla forces used the river’s routes to move supplies between the coast and Bohol’s interior.

River-based livelihood traditions persist in several barangays — small bancas and bamboo fish traps are still built by hand, though younger residents increasingly commute to Tagbilaran or Cebu for work. There is no dedicated tourist accommodation in Inabanga — the nearest options are basic pension houses in Tubigon or the full range of hotels back in Tagbilaran. Combine a stop here with a Tubigon port transit or a day trip from Tagbilaran, carry cash (no reliable ATM in town), and aim for the December–April dry season, when the river’s upper stretches are easier to navigate.
