The area carries deeper historical weight: Caylagan Cave in Barangay Magtangtang is identified as the site where Francisco Dagohoy established the so-called “First Bohol Republic” in 1744, a resistance base for the Dagohoy Rebellion — the longest revolt in Philippine colonial history, lasting over 85 years until 1829. The Francisco Dagohoy Cave and a separate marker on the Magtangtang plateau commemorate this.
