Overview

The Cathedral of Saint Joseph the Worker on Carlos P. Garcia Avenue, Tagbilaran City, is the seat of the Diocese of Bohol and the mother church of the province. The parish is one of the first six established by Jesuit missionaries on Bohol in 1595. St. Joseph was enthroned as patron saint by Fr. Joaquín de San José in 1767, one year before the Jesuits were expelled from the country. The cathedral has been rebuilt and significantly modified over four centuries, but retains 18th-century Baroque side altars, historic religious images, and the bell tower completed in 1888.

Location

Carlos P. Garcia Avenue, Poblacion, Tagbilaran City — the provincial capital of Bohol. The cathedral faces the city centre and is within walking distance of the Tagbilaran City Tourist Port and the Carlos P. Garcia Monument. One independent source additionally cites the corner of J.A. Clarin and F. Sarmiento Streets as a reference point for the church, consistent with a corner building fronting Carlos P. Garcia Avenue.

Getting There

The cathedral is in central Tagbilaran City, reachable on foot from most accommodation in the city centre, and by tricycle or taxi from the Tagbilaran Port or the airport.

Mass schedule: Ordinary days — hourly 4:00–7:00 AM, plus noon and evening masses. More masses on Sundays and holidays of obligation.

A Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration chapel is open 24 hours.

What to Expect

The exterior presents a Neo-Romanesque façade with corbelled arches beneath the cornice and a porch before the main entrance. The bell tower was constructed between 1854 and 1888 under Fr. José Sánchez.

Inside, the 18th-century Baroque side altars survive from the pre-renovation era. The main altar is 19th-century Neoclassical. Among the historically notable images are: St. Joseph (18th century), San Roque (1848), St. Vincent Ferrer (1861), and an Our Lady of Lourdes image donated in 1895 by Doña María de Bourbon of the Royal House of Spain.

20th-century renovations under Bishop Julio Rosales (1945–51) and Bishop Manuel Mascariñas (1952–70) replaced antique wooden flooring with reinforced concrete, changed the ceiling — destroying centuries-old catechetical frescoes — and moved the main altar back three metres. The massive original stone perimeter walls were also removed.

On 1 May 1996 the statue of St. Joseph the Worker was enthroned as patron saint of the entire province of Bohol.
