San Pedro Calungsod Shrine

San Pedro Calungsod Shrine is a Catholic site in Barangay Malbog, Jagna, dedicated to Pedro Calungsod — the Visayan catechist martyred in Guam in 1672 and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012. Location

Barangay Malbog, Jagna municipality, southeastern Bohol. Jagna is a port town approximately 65–70 km east of Tagbilaran City on the Bohol circumferential road.

Getting There

From Tagbilaran City, buses and vans serve Jagna (approximately 1.5–2 hours). Jagna has a port with ferry connections from Cebu and other Visayan ports, making it an alternative entry point to Bohol from the east. What to Expect

A shrine to a saint whose own story has almost nothing to do with Bohol. Calungsod was born around 1654 elsewhere in the Philippines and died at about 17 in Guam, accompanying the Spanish Jesuit missionary Diego Luis de San Vitores on the mission to the Marianas, where both were killed the same year. That makes Malbog’s devotion to him a case of the wider post-2012 canonization wave reaching a rural barangay, rather than a site tied to any local event in his life.
