Rudy's Rock

Overview

Rudy’s Rock is a wall dive at Balicasag Island, open to divers of any certification level, with a mix of soft and hard coral over a resident population of pelagic and reef species. Big-eye trevally, snapper, and sweetlips move in schools along the wall, and large green turtles are common enough to count as a near-guaranteed sighting rather than a bonus.

Balicasag has been a protected marine sanctuary since 1985 — the wall sits inside that boundary and is usually paired with the Royal Garden coral garden on the island’s northeast side for a two-dive day.

Location

Balicasag Island, Panglao municipality, Bohol. Balicasag is approximately 8 km southwest of Panglao Island by banca.

Getting There

Banca boats depart from Alona Beach, Panglao Island for Balicasag Island (approximately 30–45 minutes crossing). Most dive shops on Alona Beach operate Balicasag day trips that include Rudy’s Rock. A Balicasag Marine Sanctuary entrance fee applies.

What to Expect

Coral cover on the wall is dense after decades of reduced fishing pressure — soft and hard species both, in enough variety that the structure itself is part of the draw. Green turtles are the headline sighting, usually resting on the reef shelf or moving along the wall face; the schooling big-eye trevally add scale and motion to the same stretch of wall.

• Rudy’s Rock and Royal Garden are the two primary Balicasag dive sites and are typically dived together.
• Anchor use is prohibited in the sanctuary — dive boats moor on fixed buoys.
