Rock Island Cove

Overview

Rock Island Cove is a small cove in Barangay Basdio, Sandingan Island, built around the rock outcrop that gives it its name — a short run of white sand, swimming water, and picnic huts set directly on the surrounding rock. Sandingan Island connects to the Loon mainland by the Tajang Causeway, the same road that carries “Hugot Road,” so the cove is reachable by habal-habal or any land vehicle across the causeway, not only by banca, despite the island setting.

Location

Barangay Basdio, Sandingan Island, Loon municipality, Bohol, facing the Cebu Strait. Loon’s town center, a few kilometers south along this coast, took some of the heaviest structural damage in the province during the 2013 Bohol earthquake — its 17th-century Nuestra Señora de la Luz church lost most of its bell tower — a reminder that this stretch of coastline sits on active fault ground.

Getting There

From Tagbilaran City, travel approximately 28 km north to Loon town by bus or jeepney, then transfer to a habal-habal at Mercado de Loon for the roughly 4 km crossing to Sandingan Island via the Tajang Causeway, followed by about a 10-minute ride to Barangay Basdio. From there, ask locals for the cove’s exact location, as it is not clearly signposted.

Practical Info

Entrance fees, on-site facilities (restrooms, shade, food vendors), and snorkeling gear availability are not documented in sources found; confirm current conditions locally, for example with the Loon municipal tourism office, before visiting. Given the undeveloped setting, it’s worth bringing your own food, water, and sun protection.

What to Expect

The draw here is the rock formation itself: swimmers use it as a shaded perch between dips, and the picnic huts built directly on the rock put visitors a few steps from the water rather than back on a beachfront. The municipality’s own listing describes it as a quiet, undeveloped spot, which tracks with the absence of any signage on the way in.

Sandingan Island’s road connection via the Tajang Causeway is a relatively recent development in the area’s own history — before the causeway, the island’s barangays, including Basdio, depended on banca crossings for everything from market trips to schooling, the kind of everyday water transport still common across Bohol’s smaller coastal islands. That shift from boat-only to causeway access is part of why Rock Island Cove, Vita Isola Leisure Farm, and Hugot Road have all become visitable in a single land-based day trip rather than requiring separate boat charters.

Barangay Basdio’s economy outside the cove itself still runs mostly on fishing and small-scale farming, the same base that supports most of Loon’s coastal barangays; the cove’s picnic huts and rock perch are an informal, low-investment addition to that economy rather than a resort development, consistent with the undeveloped character the municipality’s own tourism materials describe.
