Rizal Cave

Overview

Rizal Cave in Barangay Rizal, Batuan, is a spelunking site known for its rock formations, multi-chambered layout, and a large resident bat colony — a through-cave, entrance and exit on opposite faces of the mountain, rather than the dead-end chambers more common on the island.

The cave tour typically takes 20 to 30 minutes. Some chambers require visitors to crouch or bend to pass through. A guide is required for the traverse.

The barangay, and the cave, take their name from José Rizal, the Philippine national hero executed by Spanish colonial authorities in 1896 — a naming pattern repeated in barangays nationwide, adopted as a civic tribute during the early American colonial period rather than reflecting any visit by Rizal himself. The cave’s geology has nothing to do with that history: it belongs to the same limestone karst system that pushed up the Chocolate Hills a few kilometres away, water working through the same porous rock over a longer timescale to hollow out passages rather than raise mounds.

Location

Barangay Rizal, Batuan municipality, Bohol. Located at the end of the barangay road, followed by a 20-minute hike to the cave mouth. Near Makapiko River and within a cluster of cave sites in Batuan, including Bonogan Cave and Janlud Cave.

The Batuan Cave Cluster and Its Guides

Rizal Cave is one of three karst caves the Batuan municipal tourism office maintains within its borders. Janlud Cave has a comparable low-clearance layout with a heavier concentration of stalactites. Bonogan Cave, in Barangay Upper Cabacnitan, is the more demanding of the three — two connected sections running 78 and 106 metres, with a tidal river inside that floods to the ceiling at high tide, making it a tide-table booking rather than a walk-in. Guano on the floors of all three was historically harvested as agricultural fertiliser, a working use that predates any tourism interest in them.

The tourism office prices Rizal Cave, Janlud Cave, Bonogan Cave, and the Chocolate Hills Close Encounter on a common structure: roughly ₱500–600 for the first person and ₱200 for each additional, with a discount for combining tours — channelling most of the municipality’s adventure-tourism income through one municipal desk rather than independent freelance guides.

Getting There

Batuan is approximately 35–40 km from Tagbilaran City on the road toward Carmen and the Chocolate Hills. From the Batuan town centre, travel to Barangay Rizal by habal-habal or arranged vehicle. The hike from the road to the cave entrance takes approximately 20 minutes on foot.

What to Expect

A through-cave (entrance and exit on different sides of the mountain) with multiple chambers at varying heights. Rock formations — stalactites, stalagmites — line the cave interior. A large bat colony roosts in the cave; visitors should expect the sounds and presence of bats throughout.

The route becomes progressively narrower in sections, requiring physical flexibility. The cave is described as challenging — not suited for those with confined-space anxiety or severe mobility limitations.

Bats are the cave’s most consistent residents and its main conservation concern: colonies like this one function as pest control and pollination assets for surrounding farmland, and disturbance — flash photography, loud noise, touching roosting bats — can drive them to abandon a cave outright. The paced, 20–30 minute guided format protects the colony as much as it protects visitors.
