Pandanon White Beach

Overview

Pandanon White Beach is the main beach attraction on Pandanon Island, a small island in Getafe municipality in northern Bohol. The island sits within the area of the Danajon Double Barrier Reef — one of only two double barrier reef systems in the Indo-Pacific — which accounts for the marine biodiversity of the surrounding waters. The beach is characterised by a long white sandbar and is frequently included as an island-hopping stop for tour operators from both Cebu and Bohol provinces.

Reef health and conservation

The Danajon Double Barrier Reef that gives Pandanon its clear water and fish variety is also one of the more heavily fished and historically degraded reef systems in the Philippines, a fact worth knowing before treating a snorkel stop here as purely scenic. Decades of blast fishing, cyanide fishing, and overharvesting by a dense coastal population across Getafe, Talibon, and the neighbouring Danajon municipalities damaged large sections of the reef through the late twentieth century, and marine protected area networks have since been established across parts of the system to let coral and fish stocks recover. Island-hopping visitors are, in effect, snorkelling over a reef that local and provincial fisheries offices are actively trying to rebuild — a reason to follow standard reef etiquette here (no standing on coral, no touching, no removing shells or marine life) even more strictly than on a healthier reef, since recovery in a damaged system is slower and more fragile.

Economic context

Pandanon’s economy runs almost entirely on the reef around it. Fishing families supply the milkfish, spider shells, and sea urchin sold directly to visiting boats — a direct-to-tourist sales channel that supplements what the same households earn from the regular catch sold at the Getafe municipal port. Cottage rentals for day visitors add a small secondary income stream, but there’s no resort development on the island, so tourism revenue here stays distributed among individual fishing families rather than concentrated in a hospitality business — closer to a working fishing community that welcomes day-trippers than a beach destination that happens to have fishermen nearby.

Getting There

The island is reached by boat from Getafe town on the northern coast of Bohol. Getafe is accessible from Tagbilaran by bus or van (approximately 2–2.5 hours via the Trans-Central Highway).
