Pandao Island

Overview

Pandao Island is a small island off the coast of Getafe in northern Bohol, accessible from the mainland barangay of Baud. White sand and clear water draw swimmers and snorkellers, but the visitor traffic stays mostly local — the island has none of the packaged-tour presence found on Bohol’s better-known beaches.

The approach itself is the island’s most distinctive feature: several floating native huts sit on the water along the crossing, rest houses used by seaweed farmers working the shallows. Seaweed farming for carrageenan — the gelling agent extracted from Eucheuma and Kappaphycus species — is a common coastal livelihood across Bohol’s northern barangays, and during harvest season these same huts double as collection points, giving the crossing a working-water character before the beach itself comes into view.

Getting There

What to Expect

There is no built infrastructure beyond the beach itself — no cottages, no vendors, nothing to rent — so visitors arrive with their own supplies and leave with them. The seaweed farms working the surrounding shallows give Pandao a distinct character among Bohol’s beach destinations: this is a place people fish and farm as much as visit.

Economic context

Seaweed farming for carrageenan is one of the more stable livelihoods available to coastal households in Getafe and across the wider Danajon Reef area, since Eucheuma and Kappaphycus seaweed can be grown in the same shallow, current-fed waters that also support fish and shellfish — it doesn’t compete with fishing grounds so much as run alongside them. The floating huts visitors pass on the crossing to Pandao aren’t a scenic backdrop; they’re working infrastructure, used for shelter, gear storage, and processing during harvest, when farmers dry and bundle the seaweed before it’s sold on to buyers who supply the carrageenan industry supplying food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical manufacturers well beyond Bohol. That the industry exists at all around an island with no resort development is a reminder that Pandao’s economy isn’t waiting on tourism — beach visitors are a secondary, occasional source of income layered on top of an aquaculture livelihood that would carry on with or without them.

A quieter alternative to Pandanon

Pandao sits a short crossing from Getafe’s better-known island-hopping stop, Pandanon White Beach, but draws a fraction of the visitor traffic — most tour operators from Cebu and Bohol build itineraries around Pandanon rather than Pandao, leaving this island to local day-trippers and the occasional independent traveller who asks around in Baud. For anyone who has already done the standard Danajon Reef island-hop and wants the same white sand and clear water without a boatload of other visitors, Pandao is the practical answer, with the trade-off that there’s genuinely nothing here to rely on beyond what you bring.
