Napaling Point

Overview

Napaling Point, also called Napaling Reef, sits at Tangnan on the northern coast of Panglao Island. The site is a vertical wall running from roughly 3 metres at the reef top down to about 40 metres, cut through with holes, crevasses, overhangs, and small caves along the drop-off. Large table corals dominate the wall and dense anemone colonies fill the gaps, together holding soldier fish, scorpion fish, squirrel fish, and anemone fish.

The site’s defining feature is a large, seasonally visible aggregation of sardines — the so-called Bohol sardine run — which moves along this stretch of northern Panglao coast through much of the year. Because the sardine shoal and reef top sit at only 3 to 5 metres, snorkelers and freedivers can access the spectacle without scuba equipment. The dive profile follows the wall from around 5–7 metres, then descends to 20–30 metres drifting along the drop-off before settling onto a sandy slope.

Location

Napaling Point is at Barangay Tangnan on the northern side of Panglao Island, municipality of Panglao, Bohol. It lies on the opposite coast from the main tourist belt at Alona Beach, which is on the southern shore roughly 7 km by road across the island. Doljo Point dive site is a nearby reference point on the same northern arc.

Getting There

From Tagbilaran City port, cross Panglao Bridge to Panglao Island (approximately 8 km). Head north across the island toward Tangnan. Habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) from Panglao town proper to Tangnan takes roughly 15–20 minutes. Most divers access Napaling by boat from Alona Beach dive operators, who offer it as part of two-dive day trips on the north coast.

Practical Info

No fixed entrance fee. Access is via local dive operators on Panglao; shore entry is possible but boat entry is standard. The site is suitable for Open Water certified divers and above. Snorkelers and freedivers can also access the sardine aggregation at the shallow reef top. Best diving visibility is typically during the dry season, November through May. Sardine presence is seasonal — local dive shops can advise on current conditions.

What to Expect

The dive starts at 5–7 metres on the reef flat before descending along the wall to 20–30 metres, through overhangs and small caves lined with table corals and anemone colonies. When the sardines are present, they mass into bait balls near the surface and upper reef — visible to snorkelers as much as divers, since the shoal sits at the same 3–5 metre depth as the reef top. Drift along the wall is generally mild, which keeps the site workable for intermediate-level divers rather than experts only.
