Type: Sports and Recreational Facilities

Overview

Alona Beach runs about a kilometre of white sand at the southwest tip of Panglao Island, Barangay Tawala, bounded at either end by low limestone cliffs — a formation shared with several of Panglao’s coastal points. The water sits shallow and clear inshore, with coral reef starting at snorkelling depth just offshore.

The beach takes its name from Filipino actress Alona Alegre, who filmed there in the early 1970s when the area was still undeveloped. Tourism has since become the dominant economic driver for Barangay Tawala, turning the stretch into Panglao Island’s busiest beach corridor — guesthouses, dive shops, restaurants, and bars run the length of the beachfront lane. The Alona House Reef dive site sits directly offshore, reachable without a boat transfer.

Evening activity concentrates on the beachfront food and bar strip, with live music and outdoor seating running most nights in peak season. The beach itself stays publicly accessible, its resort-managed and open-access sections running side by side along the strip.

Location

Barangay Tawala, Panglao municipality, Panglao Island. Panglao connects to Bohol’s mainland by two bridges — one via Tagbilaran City (Dao Bridge), one via Maribojoc. Alona Beach sits at the island’s southwest corner, about 12 km from Tagbilaran City across the Dao Bridge.

Getting There

From Tagbilaran City, a van or multicab jeepney departs the Dao terminal toward Panglao (about 30 minutes). Habal-habal and tricycles cover the final stretch from the Panglao junction to Alona Beach, and taxis and ride-hail services run the same route. From Bohol-Panglao International Airport, 15 km from Tagbilaran on Panglao Island, the drive to Alona Beach takes about 20–25 minutes around the island.

Practical Info

The beach is public and free. Diving, snorkelling, and island-hopping trips to Balicasag Island are booked through the dive shops and tour counters lining the strip; snorkel gear rental is widely available. Dive prices follow a standard local rate, and the density of shops makes comparing operators straightforward. Peak season (December–April) fills the beach to capacity; shoulder months run quieter, with lower accommodation rates.

What to Expect

White sand of moderate coarseness, shallow turquoise water, and direct access to the Alona House Reef for snorkelling and shore diving. Rocky outcrops mark both ends of the beach. The beachfront lane runs its full length, lined with resort gates, open-air restaurants, and dive shops, and the bar strip picks up from around 7 PM. Boats to Balicasag Island depart from the beach — a 30-minute crossing to one of Bohol’s better-known dive sites.
