Momo

Overview

Momo is a dive site off Panglao Island, about 20 km from Alona Beach. The profile starts on a shallow coral shelf (4–7 m) supporting dense coral gardens, then drops as a vertical wall to 30 m, decorated with soft corals and large sponges. Visibility is reported as good, and the shelf is shallow enough — 3–4 m — for snorkelers to work it without descending the wall.

Panglao’s reef system, Momo included, sits within a province-wide network of community-managed marine protected areas that Bohol began establishing in the 1990s to let fish stocks recover after decades of blast fishing and cyanide fishing along this coast. That recovery is part of why a site this far from the Alona cluster still holds coral cover worth a 40-minute banca ride.

Location

Off the coast of Panglao Island, Panglao municipality, Bohol. The site sits closer to Momo Beach (Barangay Tangnan) and Doljo Beach than to Alona, making it a logical add-on for divers based on the quieter north side of the island. Panglao’s economy, once centered on small-scale fishing, has reoriented substantially around dive tourism over the past two decades, and Momo is one of the sites that benefits from operators willing to run the extra distance out from Alona.

Getting There

What to Expect
