Momo

Overview

Momo is a dive site off Panglao Island, about 20 km from Alona Beach. The profile starts on a shallow coral shelf (4–7 m) supporting dense coral gardens, then drops as a vertical wall to 30 m, decorated with soft corals and large sponges. Visibility is reported as good, and the shelf is shallow enough — 3–4 m — for snorkelers to work it without descending the wall.

Panglao’s reef system, Momo included, sits within a province-wide network of community-managed marine protected areas that Bohol began establishing in the 1990s to let fish stocks recover after decades of blast fishing and cyanide fishing along this coast. That recovery is part of why a site this far from the Alona cluster still holds coral cover worth a 40-minute banca ride.

Location

Off the coast of Panglao Island, Panglao municipality, Bohol. The site sits closer to Momo Beach (Barangay Tangnan) and Doljo Beach than to Alona, making it a logical add-on for divers based on the quieter north side of the island. Panglao’s economy, once centered on small-scale fishing, has reoriented substantially around dive tourism over the past two decades, and Momo is one of the sites that benefits from operators willing to run the extra distance out from Alona.

Getting There

From Alona Beach, the site is approximately 20 km — around 40 minutes by motorized banca. Dive operators based at Alona Beach and Momo Beach House both run trips here; which shops run it regularly and current banca charter rates change often, so check directly with a dive shop when booking.

What to Expect

The dive opens on a shallow coral shelf, then drops over the wall where soft corals and sponges take over. It works for both reef-fish observation and wide-angle photography, and the upper shelf gives snorkelers a look at the same coral garden without the descent.

The vertical-wall profile and large sponge growth are the kind of feature dive shops market specifically to wide-angle photographers, distinct from the macro-focused pitch used for the shallower, rubble-bottomed sites closer to Momo Beach itself. Because the trip out runs a full 40 minutes each way, operators generally only commit a boat to Momo when a group specifically requests it or when conditions on the Alona side rule out the usual rotation — it isn’t a default stop the way Balicasag or the house reef sites are.
