Luinab Rice Terraces

Overview

Luinab Rice Terraces are located in Barangay Mayana, Jagna, at what the provincial tourism profile describes as the highest point of Bohol. The terraces cover approximately 50 hectares and are flanked by two high mountains that have carved a ravine in which the terraces sit. The terrain creates a natural enclosure with the rice fields cascading down the ravine walls.

Jagna is a southeastern municipality known for its port and as a gateway for inter-island ferries. Mayana barangay sits well inland and at elevation, accounting for the cooler climate that supports the terrace agriculture.

Getting There

Jagna is reachable by bus from Tagbilaran City (approximately 2 hours, ~60 km). FastCat and other RoRo ferries also serve Jagna port from Cebu. From Jagna town proper, habal-habal (motorbike) or tricycle is the practical option to reach Barangay Mayana and the terraces.

What to Expect

A 50-hectare terrace system set within a mountain ravine — two elevated peaks form the walls of the valley where the rice fields are maintained. The elevation and geography isolate the site, giving it a quiet, remote character unlike the more accessible lowland farmland of Bohol’s interior.

Nearby in Mayana: the Mayana Organic Strawberry Farm (MUSFA), Kabudok Falls, the Mayana Bicentennial Narra Tree, and Mt. Matunog — all within the same barangay cluster, making the area a viable half-day highland circuit from Jagna.

Notes

Jagna municipality is also known for its calamay (sticky rice confection made with coconut milk and palm sugar), produced commercially by several makers including Ching’s Calamay. The Lonoy Martyr Site, commemorating victims of the 1900 Bohol uprising, is another notable heritage point in the municipality.
