Cantagay Marine Sanctuary

Overview

Cantagay Marine Sanctuary is a coastal marine sanctuary in Barangay Cantagay, Jagna, Bohol. It is recorded in the BPTO provincial tourist-attraction inventory under the coastal landscape and seascape category, which includes dive sites and reef areas.

Note: Jagna’s own Integrated Coastal Resource Management (ICRM) Plan names three legally established, municipal-ordinance-designated marine sanctuaries (since 2001) — Tubod Mar, Pangdan, and Naatang — and Cantagay does not appear among them in that document; the ICRM plan lists Cantagay only as one of the municipality’s coastal barangays (population approximately 866 as of 2007). Whether “Cantagay Marine Sanctuary” refers to a locally recognised but not formally ordinance-designated reef area, or reflects a naming overlap, is not resolved by available sources.

Independent of that naming discrepancy, a travel account describes a double-reef formation starting just 5–6 feet off Cantagay’s shore, reachable by multicab from the coastal highway with no boat required for entry. Bantay Dagat, the community sea patrol, works the area against illegal fishing; at the time of that account, the local dive operator was Drift Divers, based in Jagna under owner Sylvio Eandi.

Location

Barangay Cantagay, Jagna, Bohol. Jagna is on Bohol’s south coast, approximately 65 kilometres east of Tagbilaran City.

Getting There

From Tagbilaran City, travel east toward Jagna by bus or van — approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. From Jagna town, proceed to Barangay Cantagay along the coast road.

No boat is required to reach the reef: shore entry directly from the coastal highway is the standard access route, and the local dive operator’s multicab handles transfers between dive sites along the shore. A boat dive can be arranged as an optional add-on, at an extra rental cost, for divers who prefer it.

What to Expect

A double reef begins just 5–6 feet from shore, with dense cover of moosehorn, brain, table, and lettuce-leaf coral, deepening toward a drop-off past 100 feet where rare, CITES-protected black coral (genus Antipathes) grows — harvesting is prohibited. Divers report damselfish, Moorish idols, tangs, hawksbill turtles, sea lilies, nudibranchs, pearl oysters, clownfish sheltering in anemones, sea cucumbers, and occasional whale sharks and reef sharks.

• Exact distance, Jagna town centre → sanctuary: Checked philatlas.com (barangay profile — gives coordinates/elevation only, no travel distance), bohol.ph (municipal profile with per-barangay population but no distance table), bohol.gov.ph (municipal overview — no barangay-level distances), and nona.net (gives Cantagay↔Jagna as approximately 1.7 km, but explicitly labeled “as the bird flies and approximate,” i.e. straight-line, not a road/travel distance suitable for a Getting There section). No source with an authoritative road-travel distance was found. Tag left in place, narrowed to just this fact since the boat-access half was resolved.
• Current entrance fee (exact amount) and present-day dive operator: Search results turned up conflicting/unconfirmed leads rather than a clean answer. (1) A TripAdvisor listing for “Drift Divers” in Jagna still exists and describes it in the present tense as “a small, environmental dive school right on the beach in Jagna” (tripadvisor.in, page could not be fetched directly — 403 — so its last-updated date could not be confirmed). (2) The 2017-era Drift Divers website, paseodelmarbohol.com, no longer resolves (DNS failure), suggesting that contact channel is dead. (3) A Trivago listing for “Resort Paseo Del Mar Seaside Inn” (trivago.com.ph) describes a resort partnership with “Jagna Dive Center Scuba” — a different name from Drift Divers — but this is unattributed marketing copy of uncertain freshness/reliability, not a firsthand-verified source. Given these conflicting signals, no dive-operator name or entrance-fee figure was written into the body; both remain flagged for a future pass. A follow-up could try calling/messaging the Drift Divers Facebook page directly, or checking the TripAdvisor listing via a non-blocked fetch method.
