Overview

Baclayon municipality contains numerous caves distributed across several of its barangays, forming a significant component of the local tourism inventory under the Nature — Caves (inland) category.

The fauna recorded in these caves includes sayaw birds (swiftlets, likely Aerodramus species whose nests are harvested as edible bird’s nests in parts of the Philippines), big-eyed lizards, and bats. The largest cave by chamber volume is Kangcaramel Cave. The longest cave system by passage length is located in Barangay Sta. Cruz.

Baclayon’s cave concentration results from the municipality’s position on the limestone platform of southern Bohol, the same karst geology responsible for the Chocolate Hills further inland.

Location

Multiple barangays within Baclayon municipality, Bohol. Baclayon is located approximately 6 km east of Tagbilaran City along the Panglao–Tagbilaran coastal road.

Named caves:

• Kangcaramel Cave — largest in the municipality; located in Barangay Tanday, within the grounds of Edith Grand Garden Wellness Resort & Adventure Park. The cave is developed for visitors, measures approximately 150 metres in length, and features staircases, viewing decks, and lighting installed by the resort, along with religious statues placed inside.
• Sta. Cruz Cave — longest passage in the municipality (Barangay Sta. Cruz)

Getting There

From Tagbilaran City, take a jeepney or multicab headed for Baclayon — approximately 15 to 20 minutes. The Baclayon Church (a major landmark) is in the poblacion; individual caves require further navigation by habal-habal or tricycle to the relevant barangay.

Kangcaramel Cave specifically: reachable by chartered habal-habal from Baclayon Poblacion to Edith Grand Garden Wellness Resort & Adventure Park in Barangay Tanday; guided entry is included in the resort’s tour (see Practical Info). What to Expect

Inland limestone caves containing cave-adapted fauna. The sayaw bird (swiftlet) colonies are ecologically notable — swiftlet nests are commercially harvested in parts of the Visayas, though whether this occurs in Baclayon is not confirmed in the source. Bat colonies in cave systems play a role in insect control and cave-ecosystem nutrient cycling.

The caves vary in size from modest passages to the larger Kangcaramel chamber. Not all caves may be safely accessible without guides.
