Bohol Heritage & Historical Landmarks: 26 Sites From Watchtowers to Ancestral Houses

26 places to see

Bohol’s heritage sites split roughly into three eras: Spanish colonial (watchtowers built against Moro raids, coral-stone civic buildings, the ancestral houses of Tagbilaran’s old Poblacion district), the American and Commonwealth period (heritage houses, early civic architecture), and World War II (memorial and massacre sites, mostly in the interior towns that sheltered guerrilla resistance). A handful of church-adjacent ruins and monuments — the Blood Compact shrine at Bool, coral-stone chapel ruins — sit here rather than under Churches because the building itself, not an active congregation, is the point.

Documentation quality is uneven: some entries, like the Punta Cruz Watchtower or the Clarin Ancestral House, have real research behind them; others are a single sentence noting a heritage house exists in a particular barangay. Most of the ancestral houses are privately owned and viewable from the street only — check before assuming you can go inside.
