Punta Cruz Watchtower

Overview

Punta Cruz Watchtower stands at the western tip of Maribojoc on the Bohol Strait coast, completed in 1796 under the Augustinian Recollect priest Manuel Sanchez de Nuestra Sra. del Tremendal. Its floor plan is an isosceles triangle, apex pointed seaward — the only watchtower of this form documented anywhere in the country’s colonial-era fortifications.

The tower was part of a coordinated coastal-defence network built by the Spanish colonial government along the Visayan coast to guard settlements against Moro slave-raiding fleets that operated during the southwest monsoon season.
