Bongan Sandbar

Overview

Bongan Sandbar is a sandbar formation about 8.5 km off Talibon, emerging within the Calutiban reef in the middle of the Danajon Double Barrier Reef — the Philippines’ only double barrier reef. At low tide it presents as a curved strip of white sand roughly 150 meters long; at high tide the sand narrows and an abandoned three-story concrete guardhouse on the site becomes partly submerged. The name “bongan” refers to a large banana variety, chosen because the sandbar’s fine white-sand formation was likened to that shape.

The sandbar is listed in the BPTO tourist-attraction inventory under Sports and Recreational — Beach for Sea Bathing, and is one of Talibon’s established island-hopping stops, used by tour operators from both Talibon and Cebu.

Location

Danajon Bank, approximately 8.5 km off the coast of Talibon, northern Bohol, within the Calutiban reef area. Talibon is a coastal municipality facing the Camotes Sea on Bohol’s northern shore.

Getting There

What to Expect

At low tide, a curved strip of white sand approximately 150 meters long, with an abandoned three-story concrete guardhouse that becomes partly submerged at high tide. The site sits within the Danajon Bank’s rich reef system and is used for swimming, snorkeling, jet-skiing, and as a stop on island-hopping tours. When not submerged, the exposed sandbar is also used as a resting and foraging spot by migratory shorebirds, including “kanaway” (terns/gulls).

Talibon municipality is one of Bohol’s northern coastal towns with a documented CRM (Coastal Resource Management) program, centered on the CRM Interpretive Center (Fisheries and Coastal Resource Management Interpretive Center, FCRMIC). The area’s fisheries and marine environment have received institutional attention through the FISH Project. Bongan Sandbar sits within this broader managed marine zone.

As of a 2021 report, two named fish wardens — Edilberto Torreon and Erickson Mamolo — patrolled the sandbar against poaching and pandemic-protocol violations under the Coastal Law Enforcement Council.

Research attempt, 2026-07-28 — [FACT NEEDED: specific boat hire rates and travel time in minutes from Talibon pier]: Checked the LGU page (talibon.gov.ph/bongan-sandbar-2) directly for pricing/timing language — none present beyond the P100 environmental fee already in the file. Checked a personal travel blog (Biyaheng Pilipinas) and a beach-directory listing (Sandee.com) — neither states a boat rate or a Talibon-pier-to-sandbar duration. A 2025 listicle (VisMin.ph, “5 Must-Visit Sandbars in Bohol”) gives “20-30 minutes, rates vary” for chartering from the municipal port, but that figure is attached to its “North Sandbar” entry, not confirmed as Bongan-specific, so it was not used. A 2016 blog (Mustachio Ventures, “Sandbar Compass”) notes Bongan/North Sandbar is 2.5–3 hours by boat from Mactan (Punta Engaño/Cordova) but gives nothing for the short Talibon-pier crossing. Also tried Cebuano boat-charter terms (“pumpboat,” “pahigot,” “pabaon”) and a TripAdvisor-focused search — no results with a traceable, fetchable source stating a rate or a Talibon-specific minute figure. No credible source found this round; tag left in place for a future pass (try: direct outreach/phone to Talibon Municipal Tourism Office, or Facebook groups/pages such as facebook.com/Boholtourismph and local Talibon tour-operator pages, which were not fetchable via this tool).
