Panglao is not a separate island in any way that affects your trip. Two concrete bridges connect it to mainland Bohol, and the crossing is a road transfer of 30 to 45 minutes. There is no ferry, and you do not need one.

The real question is not how to cross but where you arrive. Since Bohol-Panglao International Airport opened on Panglao itself in November 2018, most visitors now land directly on the island and skip the bridge entirely. Travellers arriving by sea still land at Tagbilaran Pier on the mainland and make the crossing by road. Both work; the transfer picture differs.

Arriving at Bohol-Panglao Airport

If your flight lands at Bohol-Panglao International Airport, you are already on the island. Alona Beach and the main resort strip are typically under 30 minutes away depending on traffic and how far along the coast your resort sits.

Arrange the transfer before you land. There is no Grab anywhere in Bohol province — ride-hailing simply does not operate here, which surprises travellers arriving from Cebu where it does. What is available is a private van, a hotel pickup, or a tricycle for short hops, and the private-transfer fare is not metered. Agree the price before boarding.

Arriving at Tagbilaran Pier

Coming off a ferry at Tagbilaran Pier, you cross by road. Two bridges link the city to Panglao: the original crossing near Tagbilaran itself, and a second on the Maribojoc–Dauis side. From the pier to the Alona Beach area, plan on 30 to 45 minutes by van, hired car, or tricycle, depending on your resort and traffic through the city.

Your options, in ascending order of cost and convenience:

  • Tricycle — cheapest for short hops within Tagbilaran or between nearby points. Not the usual choice for the full pier-to-Panglao run with luggage.
  • Multicab — shared local transport on a fixed route between Tagbilaran and Panglao’s town centre. Inexpensive, but it will not take you door to door.
  • Private transfer or hired van — the standard choice for the pier-to-resort or airport-to-resort run, especially with bags. Confirm the fare before boarding.

The island itself

Panglao is a low-lying limestone island of about 58 square kilometres off Bohol’s southwestern corner — flat to gently rolling, with the white-sand beaches concentrated on the south and southeast coast where Alona and Dumaluan sit. Limestone is the reason: the coast is old reef, and the beach sand is the same rock broken down.

The two bridges are comparatively recent infrastructure, built as the island’s tourism grew. Before the airport opened in 2018, every visitor to Panglao crossed one of them by land, which is why the resort strip is oriented toward Tagbilaran rather than toward any other part of Bohol. The road network still reflects a mainland-first logic that the airport has only partly rewritten — worth knowing when a map suggests a shortcut that turns out to be a farm track.

What to confirm before you book a transfer

Panglao’s resort strip extends well beyond the immediate Alona Beach cluster, and not every shared or scheduled transfer serves every property. Confirm that your specific accommodation is on the pickup or drop-off list rather than assuming — a shared transfer that stops at Alona is not much help if your resort is twenty minutes further along the Dumaluan or Danao coast.

How to book

  1. Check whether your flight lands at Bohol-Panglao International Airport. Most current routings do, which removes the bridge crossing entirely.
  2. Arrange the transfer in advance — hotel pickup or a booked private van. Ride-hailing does not exist in Bohol.
  3. Arriving by ferry, budget 30 to 45 minutes from Tagbilaran Pier, more during city traffic.
  4. Confirm your exact resort is served before booking a shared transfer.
  5. Agree the fare before boarding anything unmetered.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a ferry to get from Tagbilaran to Panglao?

No. Panglao is connected to mainland Bohol by two concrete bridges. It is a land crossing by tricycle, multicab, or private transfer.

Should I fly into Tagbilaran or Bohol-Panglao Airport?

Bohol-Panglao, if your itinerary offers it — it is on Panglao itself and cuts the transfer to most resorts to under 30 minutes. Tagbilaran remains the arrival point for ferry travellers.

How long does the transfer take?

About 30 to 45 minutes from Tagbilaran Pier to the Alona Beach area, and typically under 30 minutes from the airport.

How many bridges connect Bohol to Panglao?

Two — the original near Tagbilaran, and a second on the Maribojoc–Dauis side.

Is there Grab in Bohol?

No. Ride-hailing does not operate in the province. Use a booked private transfer, a hotel pickup, a multicab, or a tricycle.

What is the cheapest way across?

A multicab on the fixed Tagbilaran–Panglao route, though it will not reach most resorts door to door. A private transfer costs more and handles luggage and drop-off directly.
