Ughob Cave

Overview

Ughob Cave is located in Barangay Botong, Valencia, a municipality in the interior of Bohol. The cave entrance is surrounded by dense vegetation, and stalactites and stalagmites are visible at the mouth — a feature that allows even non-spelunking visitors to observe cave formations without venturing deep underground.

Inside the cave, water drips from rock formations and collects on the floor in a corner section of the underground chamber. The cave has been identified as one of fourteen potential ecotourism sites in Valencia that the local government has earmarked as future attractions to showcase the natural character of the municipality.

Valencia’s inland terrain — hilly, agricultural, and cut through with limestone formations — has produced a cluster of these smaller caves across the municipality, of which Ughob, Maubo, and Taculing are the best documented. None of them carry the name recognition of Bohol’s larger show caves further north, and that’s largely a function of geography: Valencia sits off the standard tourist circuit, its economy running on coconut, cassava, and corn farming rather than organised tourism, so a site like Ughob has stayed a locally known feature rather than a developed attraction.

Getting There

Valencia is approximately 12 km from Tagbilaran City and accessible by jeepney or habal-habal. Barangay Botong is within the municipality. Confirm the specific road route to Botong and to the cave entrance with the Valencia tourism office or locally, and check whether a guide is required or recommended before heading out, since this is not yet a fully signposted site.

The experience is low-intensity by Bohol cave standards — the site is identified as a potential site rather than an established tourist destination, meaning facilities may be minimal.

Local Taste

Botong sits in the same hill-country farming belt as the rest of Valencia, where coconut, cassava, and corn form the household economy rather than any restaurant trade. Cassava cake (bibingka de kamoteng kahoy) from local cassava is the standard merienda sold at market stalls in the poblacion — firmer and less sweet than the coastal version, a reflection of the cassava varieties grown here. Bringing food along is the practical approach for a Ughob Cave visit, since there’s nothing built for visitors at the site itself.
