Mount Labawan

Overview

Mt. Labawan is the tallest mountain in Mabini municipality, standing about 450 metres above sea level. The name comes from the Visayan “labaw” or “nilabaw” — higher-up, or surpassed — a reference to its height over the surrounding terrain.

Location

The mountain is in Barangay San Roque, Mabini, in southeastern Bohol. Mabini’s economy runs on two tracks: a coastline of dive sites along the Mindanao Sea, and an upland interior — Mt. Labawan among it — worked for farming.

Getting There

From Tagbilaran City, take a bus or van headed to Mabini along the south coastal road. Travel time is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. From the town proper, ask locally for the trailhead in Barangay San Roque.

What to Expect

The trail runs 3.1 kilometres from foothill to peak on a clear path, about 2 to 3 hours at a moderate pace, with rest areas along the way. The summit surveys the undulating hills and mountains of the neighboring barangays — the main reason to make the climb, and the clearest read available of how inland southern Bohol’s terrain is shaped.

Notes

Trail conditions may vary after heavy rain. The dry season months of December through April offer the most reliable conditions for the hike.
