Loboc River

Overview

The Loboc River runs through the municipality of Loboc in Bohol’s interior, a green, slow-moving river hemmed by forest and riverside settlement. Fed by springs and tributaries in the hilly interior, the river is calm through the town stretch and navigable by flat-bottomed boats year-round.

Its best-known offering is the floating-restaurant cruise: a flat barge that moves upriver at walking pace while passengers eat a buffet meal, passing rural riverbanks, palms, and small waterfalls before turning back toward the town landing. The pace is deliberate — the trip is a relaxed passage through the scenic riverside rather than an active outing. A cultural performance by local children is staged at a riverside stop partway through the cruise.

The river cruise is a fixture on the standard Bohol countryside loop, pairing naturally with the Chocolate Hills (approximately 30 km northeast), the Tarsier Sanctuary at Canapnapan, and Loboc Church — all within a short drive of one another along the Loboc road.

Location

The cruise landing is in Loboc town centre, Barangay Poblacion Sawang, along the main road roughly 30 kilometres northeast of Tagbilaran City. The river flows roughly southeast before joining the Loay River and emptying into the Bohol Sea at the mouth near Barangay Villalimpia.

Getting There

From Tagbilaran City, take a jeepney bound for Loboc or Carmen via the interior road. Travel time is approximately 45–60 minutes. Boats depart from two points on the river: the Loboc Tourism Complex in Poblacion Sawang (town centre) and the Loay Bridge landing roughly 5 km downstream, where several operators travel upstream toward Loboc rather than the reverse. Most organised day tours from Tagbilaran or Panglao include the Loboc River cruise as a standard stop.

Habal-habal (motorcycle taxis) are available from the Tagbilaran northern terminal for individual travellers. Entrance to the cruise includes the boat ride and buffet meal.

Practical Info

Effective April 16, 2026, the standard cruise rate is ₱1,200 per person, up from the long-standing ₱1,000 rate, per an advisory issued by the Loboc Bohol Tourism office citing rising operating costs. Discounted rates for seniors/PWD (around ₱800–1,000 with valid ID) and reduced or free rates for young children (measured by height, typically free under 3 feet) have applied under the prior fee schedule; confirm current discount tiers at the landing, as these were not restated in the 2026 advisory.

Lunch cruises run daily, departing roughly every 30 minutes from about 10:00 AM until last departure around 2:30 PM. Buffet lunch is included in the cruise fare. The boat turnaround point is at Busay Falls, a small riverside cascade where a children’s cultural group performs short dance numbers; tipping is customary. Life jackets are available but wearing them is typically optional. The river is calm and the cruise is suitable for all ages.

What to Expect

A round trip of approximately one hour at slow river pace (some operators bundling transport and extras describe the full outing as closer to two hours door-to-door). The scenery is dense riparian vegetation, bamboo stands, and occasional small settlements on the banks. The sound of the river and the forested banks make the experience markedly different from open-sea boat rides. The buffet is a mix of Filipino dishes — rice, fried or grilled chicken, pork barbecue, grilled fish, vegetables, and desserts such as biko. The cultural stop involves school-age children performing Visayan folk dances on a small stage; this portion draws mixed reactions from visitors but is a long-standing part of the cruise programme.

Water is dark green from tannic content — this is normal and does not indicate contamination. Some visitors take a brief swim at the Busay Falls turnaround pool while boats hold position, though swimming is not a formal part of the cruise programme.
