Hinagdanan Cave

Overview

Hinagdanan Cave is a naturally formed limestone karst cave in Barangay Bingag, Dauis, on Panglao Island. The cave is approximately 100 metres long with an entrance hole roughly one metre across, leading into chambers decorated with stalactite and stalagmite formations developed over thousands of years of carbonate deposition.

Inside the cave is an underground lagoon of brackish water reaching depths of 10 to 20 metres. Sunlight enters through natural ceiling apertures, illuminating the lagoon and the surrounding rock walls. The name derives from the Cebuano word hagdan (ladder): according to local oral history, a farmer discovered the cave by dropping a stone into a hole, hearing a distant splash, and constructing a wooden ladder to descend and investigate. During World War II, the cave served as a refuge for Dauis residents evading Japanese Imperial Army patrols.

Hinagdanan Cave is a designated geosite within the Bohol Island UNESCO Global Geopark, the Philippines’ first UNESCO Global Geopark, formally inscribed in 2023.

Location

Barangay Bingag, Dauis, on Panglao Island. The cave is in the interior of Panglao, roughly 2 km from the Bingag coastline. It lies within a short driving distance of Alona Beach on the southwestern shore and of Panglao town centre.

Getting There

From Tagbilaran City, cross the Panglao causeway and proceed to Dauis or directly toward Bingag. Travel time by tricycle or habal-habal from Tagbilaran is approximately 20–30 minutes. From Alona Beach, ride a habal-habal to Bingag; the ride takes around 15–20 minutes. No public jeepney route goes directly to the cave entrance — habal-habal or private vehicle is the standard approach.

The cave is managed by the local barangay. A visitor-guide source (jonnymelon.com) reports an entrance fee of ₱75 plus a ₱20 parking fee, with opening hours of 8:00 am–4:00 pm daily; treat this as indicative rather than official, since fees at LGU-managed sites change without notice — confirm on arrival. Concrete steps descend into the cave interior. Sources disagree on swimming: Wikipedia states bathing in the lagoon “is no longer advised due to karst pollutants in the water,” while the visitor-guide source describes an active freshwater swimming/diving pool with restroom facilities for changing — verify current status with the caretaker on arrival. A guide is typically available at the entrance. Lighting inside is limited — a torch or phone light is useful beyond the sunlit zone.

What to Expect

The descent into the cave takes visitors past stalactite columns and across narrow walkways to the underground lagoon. Natural light from ceiling holes creates surface reflections on the water below. The lagoon’s brackish character means visibility varies with rainfall. Temperatures inside the cave are noticeably cooler than outside — typically 24–26°C. The visit takes 20–40 minutes at a relaxed pace.
