Overview

Balili Heritage House — also called Balili Ancestral House, or simply “the Balili House,” and distinct from the nearby Beldia House/Villa Mercedes — is a two-storey residence in Poblacion II, Tagbilaran City, built in 1934 by Eladio Balili, a history teacher and businessman with interests in dried fish, lumber, furniture, transport, and construction. He built it, reportedly, as a bachelor’s retreat; he later married Pancrasia “Caring” Castro. The house is an example of Art Nouveau residential design from the American colonial (“chalet”) period in the Philippines, featuring a wide overhanging gable roof, Art Nouveau-carved eaves, harp-motif wood carvings, lattice screens, carved barandillas beneath the windows, and two sets of sliding capiz-shell windows with air vents — an unusually square floor plan for Bohol domestic architecture of the period.
