Sagbayan Peak Park

Overview

Sagbayan Peak Park sits on a ridge above the Sagbayan valley, positioned for a 360-degree view that takes in the Chocolate Hills, the Bohol Sea, and, on clear days, Cebu. Around that natural vantage point the park has built a visitor complex — tarsier enclosure, butterfly dome, open pavilion, café, and a scattering of large cartoon-figure sculptures across the grounds.

The Chocolate Hills themselves are a geological formation rather than a scenic backdrop: over 1,200 near-symmetrical limestone mounds, formed from uplifted marine coral deposits shaped by weathering and erosion over roughly two million years, and protected as a National Geological Monument. From this elevation the domes read differently than from the standard Carmen viewpoint — more dispersed, with the valley floor between them visible rather than hidden.

Sagbayan itself sits in Bohol’s upland interior and runs noticeably cooler than the coastal towns, part of the appeal for visitors coming up from the beach circuit.

Location

Sagbayan municipality, Bohol. The park sits on an elevated ridge above the Sagbayan valley, approximately 80 km from Tagbilaran City via the Trans-Central Highway.

Getting There

From Tagbilaran City, take the Trans-Central Highway through Carmen toward Sagbayan — approximately 2–2.5 hours by car or van. Sagbayan is beyond Carmen (Chocolate Hills) on the same highway. Tour operators from Tagbilaran and Panglao offer Sagbayan Peak day-trip packages. No direct public bus connects Tagbilaran to Sagbayan; the closest public transport connection is via Carmen, then habal-habal.

What to Expect

A wide staircase leads up to the plateau where the cartoon sculptures are spread across the grounds — a full-size T-rex, 19 feet long and 10 feet tall, is the one most visitors photograph first. The covered pavilion handles food and snacks from an adjacent counter; Café Baudillo, set at the mountain’s edge behind sliding glass doors, looks out over the butterfly dome and the viewing deck and runs at a slower pace than the open pavilion.

The tarsier enclosure is the more delicate stop. Philippine tarsiers are nocturnal, acutely sensitive to noise, light, and flash photography, and prone to real physiological stress in captivity — which is why no-flash rules and quiet handling aren’t a suggestion here but the baseline condition for keeping the animals viewable at all. It’s worth treating the enclosure as a conservation exhibit first and a photo opportunity second.

The 360-degree viewing deck frames the Chocolate Hills to the southeast and east, the Bohol Sea to the north, and Cebu on clear days to the northwest.
