Panglao Island Diving

Overview

Panglao Island offers a concentration of dive sites along its southern and western coastlines, suited to a range of experience levels from Open Water through advanced. The reef system is thickly covered with hard and soft corals — branching table corals, sarcophyton, and lobophyton varieties — with distinct depth zones that change character as you descend. Near the cliffs, schools of tuna, mackerel, and surgeonfish are common. At 30–33 m (90–100 ft), big snappers, groupers, and occasional black-tip sharks appear. Farther seaward, dolphins and pilot whales have been recorded.

Panglao’s best dive assets are its steep walls with caves, overhangs, and crevices that shelter abundant fish and invertebrate life. The shallow coral gardens are also suitable for snorkeling.

Location

Dive sites are distributed around the island, with the highest concentration near Alona Beach on the south coast (Barangay Danao) and extending to Doljo on the west coast and Momo Beach on the north. Key named sites include:

• Danao area (south): Multiple sites within 110 m to 8 min by outrigger from the beach. Includes wall dives, slopes, and the site closest to Alona Beach at just 400 m / 1 min by motorboat.
• “Hole in the Wall”: A cave entry at 9 m exiting at 18 m, dense with cardinal fish, sergeant major fish, black-finned snake eels, raggy scorpionfish, groupers, wrasse, and butterflyfish.

• Doljo (west coast): 15 km from Alona Beach, 35 min by outrigger, 15 min by car. Easy wall dive for Open Water Divers, hard corals and sandy spots in shallows.
• Balicasag area: Haven for underwater photographers — black corals, feather stars, overhangs, soldier fish, scorpionfish, anemonefish. White-tip sharks and moray eels often seen. Visibility up to 30 m.
• “Snake Island” / Spaghetti Shoal: 9 km southeast of Alona Beach, 50 min by outrigger. Large numbers of black-and-white-banded sea snakes and large pelagic fish. Average depth 15 m, maximum over 60 m.
• Alona Beach house reef: 5 min from beach, accessible by swim or boat. Calm, no currents, visibility 25 m. Batfish, frogfish, garden eels, barracuda schools, soft corals, pipe sponges, nudibranchs. Best at 22 m.
• Bohol Beach Club site: 10 min by motorized banca from Alona Beach (3.5 km). Good for beginners and snorkeling.
• Momo Beach (north, Tangnan): 20 km from Alona Beach; 40 min by banca or 20 min by car. Wall and slope to 40 m; snorkeling possible from 3–4 m.

Getting There

The primary access point is Alona Beach, Barangay Danao, Panglao Island. From Tagbilaran City (the main gateway with ferry and airport connections), habal-habal (motorcycle taxis) and multicabs cover the roughly 30 km route to Alona Beach in 45–60 min. From Alona Beach, dive operators run outrigger (banca) boats to all named sites; most are reachable in under 35 min. Doljo Beach on the west coast is accessible by road (15 min by car from Alona) with its own dive entry.

• Ratings on individual sites vary; the Danao wall site near Belleview Rock Resort is rated 3/5 for difficulty.
• Minimum certification: most sites are rated suitable for PADI Open Water or higher; the southwestern drift site requires experience with strong currents.
• Snorkeling is viable at multiple sites, particularly the Danao wall, Alona house reef, Puntod coral garden, and Momo Beach shallows.
• The Danao area is noted as unaffected by dynamite fishing.
• Current dive operator pricing (2025–2026, per published rate cards from two Alona Beach-based shops): single boat dive roughly ₱1,800–3,920 depending on operator and inclusions (gear rental often billed separately at ~₱500/day); two-dive packages roughly ₱3,600–6,720. What to Expect

The sites range from calm, current-free beginner dives (Alona house reef, Bohol Beach Club, Doljo) to demanding drift dives at the southwestern point. Wall dives with caves and overhangs are the signature feature. The coral coverage is generally good, with hard and soft coral variety throughout. The Balicasag-adjacent site (likely referring to the outer reef zone) offers the best macro photography conditions. Sea snakes are common at Spaghetti Shoal and are non-aggressive when not disturbed. Dolphin and pilot whale encounters are possible in deeper water farther from the island.
