Napaling Dive Site

Overview

Napaling Dive Site is a sloping wall on the coast of Panglao Island, carrying black corals and dense concentrations of feather stars. It suits PADI Open Water certified divers and above, and doubles as a snorkelling spot when the sea is calm.

The wall is most productive between 8 and 12 metres; past 30 metres the coral cover thins out. Visibility runs 12 to 20 metres under normal conditions, with current typically light — 0 to 2 on a 5-point scale.

Like much of the reef around Panglao, the site still carries some marks of historical dynamite fishing — a practice that shattered coral structure across the Visayas before enforcement tightened, and one that reef systems here are still recovering from.

Location

Napaling is on the coast of Panglao Island, Bohol, accessible both by boat from Alona Beach and by land. The exact barangay position requires verification.

Getting There

By boat: The standard approach from Alona Beach. In rough water conditions on Alona, the land approach is the alternative.

By land (jeepney or car): Take a jeepney or vehicle to the site. For a land dive entry, note that the path down to the water can be slippery with full dive equipment. Entry and exit are at the same point. Walk carefully down the cliff to the water’s edge.

Dive direction: Begin the dive with the wall on the left shoulder, heading southwest.

What to Expect

The gradual wall slope centers on black coral formations and feather stars, with young barracuda and banner fish (Heniochus) regularly seen. The shallow band, 8 to 12 metres, holds the most concentrated marine life and is where the site works best for underwater photography.

The land entry is the harder option — a steep, sometimes slippery cliff path with full gear, using the same point for entry and exit.

Notes

The Danajon Bank (Double Barrier Reef) lies to the north of Panglao, and the area’s broader reef system provides context for the marine biodiversity found at Napaling and surrounding sites.
