Mt. Dolores

Overview

Mt. Dolores is a highland in Carmen, the municipality that hosts the Chocolate Hills. Carmen’s interior is defined by conical karst mounds — an uplifted coral-reef platform that rainwater has weathered into more than a thousand individual hills over geologic time, the accepted geological explanation for the formation. Local folklore offers a different account: that the hills are the dried tears of a heartbroken giant, a story told to generations of Boholano children and worth mentioning as legend, not fact.

Location

Mt. Dolores is in Carmen municipality, in the interior of Bohol. Carmen is approximately 55 kilometres north of Tagbilaran City and is the primary access point for the Chocolate Hills complex.

Getting There

From Tagbilaran City, take a bus or van headed to Carmen. Travel time is approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. From the Carmen town proper, ask locally for directions to the Mt. Dolores trailhead.
