Garden Eel

Overview

Garden Eel is a dive site off Panglao Island classified under Nature — Dive Site in the BPTO 2025 tourism inventory. It is accessible to PADI Open Water divers and above, and is particularly well regarded for night diving. The site sits within Panglao’s dive-tourism circuit, one of the busiest in the Philippines, and is worked by most of the island’s operators as a regular rotation stop rather than a specialty add-on.

The site begins with a bow-shaped cliff forming a wall dive. The top of the wall carries an active coral garden with a high density of small reef fish. Past the coral garden, the terrain descends via a sandy slope to approximately 25 meters depth. At the base of the slope, large colonies of sand eels, moray eels, and spotted garden eels (Heteroconger hassi) are present, retreating into the sand as divers approach. The upper wall also hosts a variety of nudibranchs.

Getting There

Panglao Island is connected to Bohol mainland by bridge. Dive boats depart from Alona Beach and other Panglao dive operators. Most operators on the island offer this site as part of their regular rotation.

What to Expect

Descending the wall, the coral garden overhead does most of the reef-fish work — expect it busy and photogenic well before the eels come into view. The real destination is the sand at the base of the slope: spotted garden eels (Heteroconger hassi) extended in rows, retracting into their burrows the moment a diver closes the distance, which makes a slow, low approach worth the extra bottom time. Sand eels and moray eels share the same stretch of sand, and nudibranchs on the upper wall keep the macro photography productive on the way back up.

Night dives change the cast entirely — different species surface, and bioluminescence most divers only hear described becomes visible underwater.

The reef flats here are a separate system from Bohol’s Danajon Bank double barrier reef further north — one of only a handful of double barrier reefs anywhere in the world.

Notes

• The spotted garden eel (Heteroconger hassi) is the namesake species — a colonial eel that lives in burrows in sandy substrate, extending its body to feed on plankton and retracting when disturbed.
