BBC Dive Site

Overview

BBC Dive Site is a boat-access reef-and-wall dive located off Panglao Island, Bohol. The top reef has an average width of 110 meters, making all dives here boat dives rather than shore entries. The wall drops to an average depth of 18 meters, transitioning to a sandy slope extending toward 30 meters.

The site is well-suited for check-up dives, skills training, and divers at the PADI Open Water level and above. The most productive section of reef is in the center of the site.

Marine life on the reef and wall includes multiple sponge species, brown daisy corals, gorgonians, and pygmy seahorses. Fish life includes schools of sergeant majors (damselfish), black damselfish, glassfish, scorpionfish, moray eels, snake eels, and frogfish. On the sandy slope, black and blue-lined nudibranchs are frequently observed.

At 25 meters depth, larger pelagic species are encountered: barracuda, tuna, snake mackerel, and mackerels.

The site is noted in connection with the Danajon Bank (Double Barrier Reef) system, the only double barrier reef in the Philippines and one of very few in the world.

Location

Off Panglao Island, Panglao, Bohol. Panglao is the primary dive hub of Bohol, accessible from Tagbilaran City via the bridge connecting the mainland to the island (approximately 20–30 minutes by road). Dive operators in Alona Beach and the broader Panglao beach strip run regular boat trips to BBC.

What to Expect

BBC offers a range of diving experiences across its depth zones. The shallower reef top (0–18 m) is productive for macro subjects — nudibranchs on the sandy slope, pygmy seahorses in gorgonians, and frogfish on rubble. The wall section carries sponge and coral growth with small schooling fish. Deeper at 25 m, the site shifts to open-water sightings of barracuda, tuna, and mackerel schools.

The site’s accessibility and range of difficulty make it a practical check-out dive for newly certified divers and a reliable mid-depth site for more experienced divers working toward advanced certifications.

Notes

BBC Dive Site should not be confused with BBC Reef, a separate and distinct dive site off Panglao also in this dataset. BBC Reef is the house reef in front of the Bohol Beach Club resort and features two submerged jeepney wrecks as artificial reef structures.
